Epic Games co-founder buys stake in NHL team

Epic Games vice president and co-founder Mark Rein is now a co-owner of the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes. Rein, and his wife Tara, are among the professional hockey team's latest round of investors, the organization announced today.

The Carolina Hurricanes play their home games at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina, just a 10-minute drive from the Gears of War and Unreal Engine company's headquarters.

Mark and Tara join transportation service Pitt Ohio president and owner Chuck Hammel, along with two investors who wished to remain nameless, as members of Hurricanes Holdings. It was not mentioned what level of investment the Rein family committed to.

The Carolina Hurricanes were not always known by that name. The team was formed as the New England Whalers, before later becoming the Hartford Whalers, based out of Connecticut's capital city.

The team moved to North Carolina in 1997 and rebranded themselves the Carolina Hurricanes. The squad won the Stanley Cup during the 2005-2006 season.
